I have had many people ask me how to do upholstery. I am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination….
But, I am lucky to live a few miles from a fabulous school, The Eliot School of Fine Arts in Jamaica Plain, MA. The Eliot School offers an array of classes and workshops including everything from photography to woodworking. I took an upholstery class taught by the hilarious and ridiuclously talented Paul DeVito. Paul has over 20 years experience in upholstery and he is truly a master at his craft. His classes are insanely popular and sell out fast so if you are interested, sign up ASAP.
For those of you not in the Boston area, check out your local art and trade schools, they may offer some classes.
If you can’t find any classes in your area, Spruce, based in Austin, TX has a selection of amazing DIY upholstery DVDs and books. Check them out, get inspired, and start rehabbing some great pieces!

I have traveled from Sugar Land (near Houston) to Austin to take the classes at Spruce three times now! Yes, I’m hooked. Will be going back October, November and December for sure. The classes are great, learn so much and the ladies (Sprucettes) are SO sweet. Amanda Brown (owner) really knows her stuff. I highly recommend taking the classes if you are in (or around) the Austin area. P.S. Plus you walk away with a really AWESOME chair to boot!
